Mother and Baby Orangutan Rescued From Simpang Perdau by WRU BKSDA KALTIM Team

On Tuesday, May 30, 2023, the BKSDA East Kalimantan Center received a report of an adult Orangutan in the area of the Sangatta-Simpang Perdau-Muara Wahau axis road. The reporting community also stated that this orangutan had entered the community's settlement several times, especially eating fruit in the garden around the house. There were many old and new nests in the area, indicating that the Orangutan in question had been in the area for quite some time.

Then, on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, after conducting surveillance in the morning, the East Kalimantan BKSDA WRU team decided to conduct a rescue. They decided to capture the mother and baby Orangutan so that they could be moved to a safer forest. In the afternoon, the WRU team, assisted by East Kalimantan BKSDA partners (CAN Indonesia), successfully evacuated the mother and baby Orangutans.

Head of East Kalimantan BKSDA M. Ari Wibawanto, S.Hut, M.Sc said, “That animal rescue efforts like this really need the support of all parties, be it government agencies, NGOs and the community, so that wildlife, especially protected ones including Orangutans, can continue to live in nature sustainably.”
