Update on the restoration of forests and land in the Long Deq

The Kelay River is a large river in the province of East Kalimantan, Indonesia, with a catchment area of 500 square kilometres and a length of 155 kilometres. The Kelay River is located 100.2 kilometres from Berau Regency, East Kalimantan Province. On one of the tributaries of the Berau River is a forest and land area called Long Deq. Long Deq is within the administrative area of Kampung Merasa, Kelay District, Berau Regency, East Kalimantan Province.

In 2019, CAN Indonesia restored five hectares of forest and land in the Long Deq area. This was done because mining activities are taking place near Kampung Merasa. These activities are causing deforestation and damage to the ecosystem, and threatening the habitat of protected wildlife such as orangutans and Bornean gibbons.

CAN Indonesia's team of just three people managed to plant 5000 tree seedlings in Long Deq. At the time, the Dayak Uma Baka community living in the village of Merasa had not accepted CAN Indonesia idea of restoration, with the majority still hegemonic about the impact of the presence of mining.

However, CAN Indonesia ambitious work to improve the condition of Kalimantan forests, which continue to be destroyed, cannot be stopped by the behaviour of the community, which has not accepted CAN Indonesia restoration work. By the year 2023, 5,000 tree seedlings planted by CAN Indonesia in the forest and land area of Long Deq will have grown big and tall. The saplings are petai and durian.

The petai and durian trees will benefit people and wildlife using the agroforestry method. Long Deq is a form of CAN Indonesia love for the world of forest restoration. To be part of protecting forests like Long Deq, start protecting forests and land now.
